What a Sedan or Hatchback Pre-Purchase Inspection Checks
A sedan or hatchback pre-purchase inspection is a full check of an everyday car before you hand over the money. The Standard inspection ($250) works through 150 points, from the engine, gearbox and cooling system to the brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, body and electrics. It includes paint-depth spot checks for crash and hail repairs, a battery load check, a scan for current and stored fault codes, and a road test of 5 to 7 km where the car can be driven. Premium ($395) adds full paint-depth mapping, an extended road test with a short highway run where possible, live diagnostic data and a market valuation with negotiation tips.
Both packages include a PPSR certificate and a report with photos the same day, and we inspect at homes, dealers and auctions across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
Engine and Cooling
Leaks, noises, smoke and oil condition, plus the radiator, hoses and belts
Gearbox
How the automatic, CVT or manual shifts on the road test, and any slipping or shudder
Suspension and Steering
Worn bushes, shocks and steering parts that show up as knocks, pulling or uneven tyre wear
Brakes and Tyres
Pads, discs and fluid, plus tread depth, tyre age and wear patterns
Body and Paint
Panel gaps and paint-depth readings for crash or hail repairs, and rust where it can be reached
Cabin and Electrics
Air conditioning, windows, locks, lights, airbag warnings and a fault-code scan

First Cars
Buying a First Car for a P-Plater
In Queensland, P1 and P2 drivers under 25 can’t drive a high-powered vehicle. For a car built from 1 January 2010, that means a power-to-weight ratio above 130 kW per tonne. For an older car, it includes any turbocharged or supercharged petrol engine, eight or more cylinders, or more than 210 kW. Check the car against the provisional licence rules before you buy, because a sporty older hatch can be off limits. The inspection then tells you whether the car itself is sound, from the tyres and brakes to the airbag warning light.
FAQ
Sedan and Hatchback Pre-Purchase Inspection Questions
More in our guide to whether an inspection is worth it.
Is an inspection worth it on a cheap car?
Often more so. A cheaper car is more likely to be older, with only a short statutory warranty from a dealer and none at all in a private sale, so a fault becomes your cost straight away.
Do you check for hail damage?
Yes. Paint-depth spot checks on Standard and full mapping on Premium show where panels have been repaired or repainted. A car written off after a storm shows on the PPSR certificate.
Can you tell if the timing belt has been done?
We check the service history you give us and the engine bay. If the records don’t show a timing belt change, the report says so, so you can ask the seller or price it in.
Do I need to be there?
No. The inspector meets the car at the seller’s place, and you get the report with photos the same day.
How much is a sedan or hatchback inspection?
$250 for Standard or $395 for Premium, each with a PPSR certificate. See the packages.
