EV Pre-Purchase Inspection

Buying a used electric car? We inspect it where it’s parked across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, check the battery, charging system and high-voltage parts, and can add an Aviloo battery test with a state-of-health certificate.

EV Checks

What an EV Inspection Checks

An EV pre-purchase inspection covers the car like any other, plus the parts only an electric car has. InspectCar’s Standard inspection ($250) checks 150 points, from the brakes, steering, suspension and tyres to the body, cabin and electrics, with a scan for fault codes and a 5 to 7 km road test where possible. Add the EV or hybrid check for $60, or choose Premium ($395), and the inspector also checks the battery’s health, the charging system and the high-voltage components. Premium adds live diagnostic data where the car supports it, full paint-depth mapping and a market valuation.

For a certificate showing the battery’s state of health as a percentage, add an Aviloo battery test: $250 on its own, or $450 with Premium. Standard and Premium both include a PPSR certificate and a report with photos the same day, and we inspect across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

What Else We Check on an EV

Alongside the battery and charging checks:

Charge port, cable and charging flap

Tyres: EVs are heavy, so we look closely at wear

Brake discs, which can rust when regenerative braking does most of the stopping

The underbody and battery casing: scrapes, dents and leaks

With Standard or Premium

An inspection where the car is parked

A scan for fault codes and a road test where possible

Photos and plain-English findings

A PPSR certificate and a same-day report

The battery test on its own doesn’t include these.

Battery Health

Why Test an EV Battery?

The high-voltage battery is the most expensive part of an electric car, and its condition decides how far the car goes on a charge. Batteries lose capacity with age and use, at different rates from car to car, so two cars of the same model and year can be in quite different shape. The range on the dashboard depends on how the car was last driven, so it isn’t a reliable guide to the battery’s health. What wears a battery down:

FAQ

EV Pre-Purchase Inspection Questions

More answers on our FAQs page, or see all packages and prices.

Do you inspect Teslas and BYDs?

Yes, and every other make of electric car. Whether the Aviloo battery test works depends on the model, so tell us the make, model and year when you call.

It’s how much energy the battery can hold now, as a percentage of what it held when new. The Aviloo certificate gives it as a percentage and compares it with similar cars.

Yes. The charge port, the cable and the charging system are part of the EV check and of Premium.

Yes. The EV or hybrid check covers plug-in hybrids too, and Aviloo’s test works on many plug-in hybrid batteries.

Standard with the EV check is $310, and Premium is $395. Both include a PPSR certificate. The Aviloo battery test is $250 on its own, or $450 with Premium.

Costs

Buying a Used EV in Queensland

When you transfer a used car’s registration in Queensland, you pay vehicle registration duty on its value: the price you paid or its market value, whichever is higher. Electric cars and hybrids pay a lower rate, $2 for every $100 of value up to $100,000, against $3 for a four-cylinder petrol car and $4 for one with seven or more cylinders. Above $100,000, an EV pays $4 for every $100.

Before you buy a used EV:

The PPSR certificate with Standard and Premium shows whether the car is recorded as written off or stolen, or has money owing on it.
